Recently, while hiking in Utah at 8500 feet, I had a realization about how instrumental Mother Nature is in our wardrobe choices! The fresh beauty of the virgin white snow surrounding me caused me to yearn to wear white. The notion of wearing white after Labor Day as a taboo is not only archaic, it makes no sense. I do think seasonal changes can dictate what we want to wear and when. For example, in fall we instinctually go to an autumnal color palette. In spring, we shed the black clothing of winter for pinks, greens, lavender. Therefore, the winter snow inspires a winter white. This might inform the recent trend of white boots. I have many clients that feel conflicted about wearing these cool boots once it gets cold. Personally, I think they are the perfect antidote to the doldrums of winter clothing. Or, maybe it’s a skirt that has the ‘weight’ of winter: a boucle, or mohair, that could mimic the texture of snow lightly laying on an evergreen…. paired with a black cashmere sweater and a chunky motorcycle boot, it’s the perfect ‘pick me up’ to dreary winter wear!
